STORE Summer School

STORE Summer Schools are collaborative two-week courses in architecture, art and design. Each year, the programme brings students together to design and construct ambitious and experimental design and construction projects, culminating in large-scale installations and inspiring public events.

Now in its seventh year, the Warsaw Summer School will team up with the Osiedle Jazdow community. The Osiedle Jazdow community is a dynamic local collective based in a colony of twenty-seven wooden huts which were built in 1945 to provide temporary housing for those responsible for rebuilding the city. Having fulfilled their temporary purpose, the huts themselves have now become an integral part of the fabric of Warsaw and a symbol of urban renewal.

During the duration of the course, The Warsaw Sumer School will behave as a temporary extension of the Osiedle Jazdow community. This will involve eating together, watching film screenings and attending public lectures, integrating with and learning from local artists and craftspeople and working collaboratively to design and build a exciting new addition to the historic Jazdow colony.

Our summer schools aim to engage both participants and the wider public in exciting and innovative ways. Over the past seven years, our students have built a rooftop pleasure garden, built and choreographed an open air stage, and transformed a public square into a living room for a night.

Our summer schools are each led by experienced architects, artists and designers teaching at leading universities. The breadth of expertise they provide allows us to offer a programme which considers architecture in terms of urbanism, performance and craft while giving students the chance to test their ideas in the public realm.

As part of a diverse, energetic and creative group, students are guided by our tutors through hands-on, design processes driven by physical prototyping and testing. They gain experience in effective collaboration while also getting the chance to develop their confidence and leadership skills. Regular design critiques, photography and portfolio tutorials will provide valuable opportunities for critical reflection on their work, both as a team and as individuals.

Who can apply

This course is open to students between the ages of 15-25 with varying levels of experience. It will be of particular benefit to students interested in studying architecture, design or art at university level but also those currently enrolled in further education. Equally the course will provide an introduction to ambitious beginners with no design background.

STORE’s ethos of design through making ensures accessibility to those without extensive experience. Each and every student will be challenged imaginatively and creatively by set themes and by the scale of activities undertaken.
