Title:
Cognitive and Emotional Dimensions of Language Learning in VR
Bio
Dr Regina Kaplan-Rakowski is an Assistant Professor of Learning Technologies at the University of North Texas, the President of the Computer-Assisted Language Instruction Consortium (CALICO), and an Associate Editor of the Australian Journal of Applied Linguistics (AJAL). She also serves on the editorial boards of the Educational Technology & Society, Language Learning & Technology, and the Journal of Technology and Teacher Education. Kaplan-Rakowski’s research interests include the educational impact of immersive learning technologies (e.g., virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality), emotional responses to learning technologies, and computer-assisted language learning.
Abstract for the workshop:
This workshop will provide language educators with a hands-on experience using high-immersion virtual reality (VR) technology. Through interactive demonstrations and practical examples, participants will develop a better understanding of how VR can be implemented in language-specific contexts. The workshop will cover a range of VR language learning applications, from immersive language scenarios where interpersonal interactions can take place to virtual cultural experiences such as “traveling” to other countries or interacting with target-language typical scenarios.
Abstract for the lecture:
High-immersion virtual reality (VR) is a rapidly developing technology that has potential in language learning research and practice. VR offers omnidirectional, sensory-rich immersive experiences allowing language learners to practice languages in realistic, interactive, and safe settings. This lecture will overview the most recent research on the use of VR, focusing particularly on the development of language skills and competencies. The challenges associated with integrating VR into language learning curricula will be further discussed. The lecture will highlight practical examples of VR language learning applications and discuss their benefits and limitations. The audience will gain a deeper understanding of the potential of VR in language learning and its future pedagogical implications.
