Multimodality and Linguistic Variations in the Works of Bob Dylan Sung in French

The Institute of English Studies cordially invites all students and staff to an open lecture by Dr Jean-Charles Meunier

The songs of Bob Dylan include different types of linguistic variations, which contribute to his distinctive style. The effect thus produced is transferred in different ways by the French translators, who also have to take into account the other modes present in a song: the voice, the music, and the sound engineering. Through the lens of multimodality, Jean-Charles Meunier analyses several French versions in order to show how meaning travels across languages and modes, allowing the translators to reproduce Dylan’s idiosyncrasies in the target work.

No knowledge of French is needed to follow the lecture.

We warmly encourage all students of English Studies and anyone interested in translation and music to attend!
