Thanks to two case studies, Jean-Charles Meunier explores the interplay of class, race and gender in the construction of musical genres such as folk music and chanson réaliste on the one hand, and the performance of masculinity on the other. The multimodal approach takes into consideration the context of production of the source and target works, including the studio vs live recording dichotomy and its consequences on the reception of the work. This presentation also raises issues such as the identification of the source work and the role that the identity of the performer plays in the translation process.
No knowledge of French is needed to follow the lecture.
We warmly encourage all students of English Studies and anyone interested in translation and music to attend!
