Learning and Teaching English
The aim of the seminar is to explore the issues concerning the process of learning and teaching foreign languages to children, teenagers and adults. Students will investigate the topics which interest them within this area, but the following ones are suggested for discussion: developing language skills, literacy in particular, the development of sociolinguistic and intercultural competence, learning strategies, acquiring vocabulary and grammar, assessment techniques, individual differences, classroom interactions as well as communicative and integrative approaches to teaching foreign languages. During the seminar a wide variety of aspects of teaching and learning will be discussed, such as: motivation, autonomy, using didactic aids and authentic materials, the role of the mother tongue and its influence on the acquisition of English, to name just a few. Apart from typical research methods used in this area, ways of analyzing discourse for the purposes of foreign language learning and teaching will be covered during the seminar. The students will be required to read and critically analyze academic texts, make short presentations on the topics of their theses, participate in group discussions and one-on-one consultations. The evaluation will be based on the student’s progress in work on the MA thesis, presentations and participation in the discussions.
