Opis projektu/Project description:
The project comprises four studies focused on Kashubian, an understudied, endangered language: (i) an experimental study of the evolution of diphthongs, (ii) a fieldwork study of paradigm uniformity effects, (iii) a fieldwork study of paradigm contrast effects and (iv) a sociolinguistic study. The project provides a unique opportunity to realize 3 objectives. First, it will shed new light on the developments and systematic biases that have shaped and are shaping the Kashubian vowel system, thus fulfilling the goal of endangered language documentation. Second, it will contribute to our better understanding of the underpinnings of listener-oriented sound change and of the universal pressures underlying paradigmatic effects. Given the attested synchronic variation and as yet a relatively moderate impact of standardization pressures, Kashubian provides fertile ground for validating the research hypotheses related to the main themes of this project. Last but not least, the project uses semi-structured interviews to investigate social attitudes to Kashubian and the strength of social networks among its speakers, as such factors determine language preservation.
