Research interests and projects

Research interests:

  • the relationship between phonetics and phonology - speech dynamics and cognitive processes
  • theoretical and experimental approaches to phonology, in particular: the dynamical systems approach to phonology/phonetics, articulatory phonology, metrical theory, optimality theory, functional approaches based on language use and communicative functions, computational approaches (probabilistic generalisations), psycholinguistic models of language processing
  • experimental research on speech production mechanisms in relation to the phonological system of a language, based on instrumental techniques: acoustic phonetics, 2D/3D/4D ultrasound, Electromagnetic Articulography (EMA), Electroglottography (EGG)
  • micro-prosody, topologies of phonological representations, abstract spatiotemporal inter-gestural coordination relations and their physical consequences
  • syllable in phonological theory and experimental approaches
  • assimilation and coarticulation
  • speech prosody, the phonetic grounding of primary/secondary stress, phonetic effects (temporal adjustments) at the edges of prosodic domains
  • L1 phonological acquisition (formal and empirical issues concerning the origins and development of phonological organization in the child)
  • L2 phonetics/phonology
  • phonology and phonetics of Polish and other Slavonic languages
  • varieties of English

Research infrastructure development:

  • Experimental research feeds on high-quality quantitative data. The first phonological laboratory was established by Beata Łukaszewicz at the Institute of English Studies in 2014.  In 2022 she created a brand-new lab (Speech Imaging Laboratory) in the new building of the Faculty of Modern Languages, University of Warsaw. The lab specialises in speech production (acoustic and articulatory) experimental research, and is equipped with an ultrasound system (with 2D, 3D/4D, and x-plane imaging), an electroglottograph, high-quality audio equipment, and MATLAB-based software; the equipment was purchased thanks to external funding.

Administrative position:

2021 – 2025 Head of the Department of the English Language
